Your periodic Sinai upda-HOLY CRAP WHAT THE HELL?

Wilayat Sinai, the ISIS affiliate that is currently engaged in an armed conflict with the Egyptian armed forces in the Sinai and has started lobbing rockets into southern Israel to escalate things further, attacked an Egyptian coastguard vessel in the Mediterranean today and set it on fire. How it set that ship on fire is up for debate; Cairo simply says that the ship “caught on fire” during a firefight with militants, but photographs released by Wilayat Sinai appear to show the group striking the vessel with a missile:

Official reports say that the ship was evacuated with no casualties, but man, really?

It appears that the group used a guided anti-tank missile, which Wilayat Sinai is known to possess, to strike the ship, and I guess by that metric this attack shouldn’t seem that surprising, but something about those pictures is shocking. The burning ship was apparently visible from inside Gaza, but Israel does not seem to have been involved in the rescue operation.

Long story short, Sinai continues to be the most volatile spot in the region at the moment.

Hey, thanks for reading! If you come here often, and you like what I do, would you please consider contributing something (sorry, that page is a work in progress) to keeping this place running and me out of debtor’s prison? Thank you!
