A single gunman (so far as is known right now) named Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, a native of Kuwait and naturalized US citizen, attacked two military facilities (a recruitment center and a Naval reserve center) in Chattanooga, Tennessee, earlier today, killing four Marines and wounding a Marine recruiter and a police officer before either being killed by police or killing himself. At the moment there’s no indication what Abdulazeez’s motives were, though there are some obvious possibilities, especially with this likely being the last night of Ramadan. A Twitter account affiliated with ISIS appears to have posted a tweet using the hashtag “#Chattanooga” right around the time when the shootings were starting or taking place UPDATE: it was actually a couple of hours after the shootings took place.
Talking Points Memo is updating its reporting as more information comes in, so that’s one place to keep checking for more information. Twitter is another as long as you’re willing to wade through the noise.
UPDATE: According to the AP, there’s no indication that Abddulazeez was known to the FBI, which is leading the investigation since members of the military were killed. So far, they’ve found nothing that ties Abdulazeez to any international terrorist organization, but obviously it’s still early in the investigation. Two women were taken out of what is believed to be Abdulazeez’s house in handcuffs earlier today.
